Birthball (65 cm)

Details

Appropriate for women between 5'- 5'7" in height. This round 65cm ball can be used to prepare for, or during, labor. This physical therapy ball (also called a "birth ball") is made of a new specially-formulated burst-resistant material and is being used in hospitals, biirth centers, & homes throughout North America. Its use during labor & birth facilitates physiologic positions for birth. In pregnancy, sitting on the ball comforts and strengthens the lower back. Sitting upright helps the abdomen be a hammock for the baby and encourages the baby to settle in an anterior position. It also increases blood flow to the uterus, placenta & baby. Sitting upright on the ball: Woman can lean forward, sway, gently bounce & pelvic rock Increases blood flow to uterus, placenta, & baby Relieves pressure on perineum and can increase the pelvic outlet as much as 30% Helps relieve back discomfort Uses gravity encouraging descent of baby The use of the ball is very helpful in labors complicated by a baby in the persistent posterior position. It allows the mother to have the freedom to shift her weight for comfort while maintaining a hands-and-knees position thus the laboring woman can lean over the ball and keep her pelvis mobile & encourage the baby to rotate to a more favorable position for birth. Its a way to be in a hands and knees position without straining the wrists. This position on the ball makes it easy to rock forward and back , side-to-side & make gentle circles during contractions. This position may relieve pressure on swollen anterior lip of cervix
